5 Mistakes Travelers Make When Leaving Home

When you leave your home for more than just a day or two on vacation, it helps to carry with you some peace of mind.  You want to leave your home with the knowledge that it will be left undisturbed while you are away.

The problem is that some people make a few common, and terrible, mistakes before they leave home.  Failing to take a few specific actions could mean the difference between coming home to a safe place and coming home to a mess.  Check out a few things you should avoid doing before you leave for your grand adventure.

Stop your mail before you go

When you are away from your home for an extended amount of time, the mail will indefinitely begin to build.  Experienced criminals look for cues like a full mailbox to figure out who has left their home unattended.

It is easy to get your local post office to hold your mail until you return.  You spent a lot of time and money finding the perfect house.  It does not cost you anything, except time to get a hold on your mail.

Pay attention to your lights and windows

One of the most common mistakes people make when traveling away from home is to close off all their windows.  The best thing to do while you are away is to leave your curtains and shades just as you would have them if you were at home.

Even though it may seem like a bad idea to leave the inside of your home exposed, you should reconsider.  Leaving your curtains opened not only makes your home look occupied, but it allows for neighbors and law enforcement to see inside.  If someone were to break into your home, drawn curtains would provide the perfect cover.

Avoid broadcasting your travel plans

The worst travel mistake you can make is to broadcast your travel plans all over the internet.  Posting on social media that you are hundreds of miles away from all of your belongings is like leaving the front door unlocked.

Too often, people overlook the fact that thousands of web users can see your every move.  Wait until you get home from your vacation to share your experiences.

Tell only the right people about your absence

If possible, have a close friend or family member come by and check on your home while you are away.  Tell your trusted neighbors of your travel plans, so they can watch over the property until you return.

Invest in your home’s security

The most obvious mistake would be to overlook the possibility of a home security system.  Technology has created such an array of options in home security that there is no reason why you should pass on the investment.
